Government Cuts 3 percent Workers Salary for Tapera

Jakarta – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) announced regulations about cutting salaries for all Indonesian workers, including civil servants, police-military personnel, private-sector employees, and self-employed workers for the Public Housing Savings (Tapera).

The regulation sets in Government Regulation Number 21 of 2024 concerning amendments to PP Number 25 of 2020 concerning the Implementation of Tapera on May 20.

In this regulation, the amount of the deposit at 3 percent of salary for worker participants and income for independent worker participants.

Then, in Article 5 paragraph 3, it's stated that workers and independent workers who earn the minimum wage are required to become participants.

Moreover, these participants are at least 20 years old or married when registering. As for independent workers income is under the general wage, they can also become Tapera participants.

On the other hand, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated that the decision to cut salary as stipulated in Government Regulation (PP) Number 21 of 2024 had been carefully calculated.

"Yes, everything is calculated. With any new policy, the community assesses its feasibility and impact. Like with BPJS, excluding the 96 million who received free BPI, it faced initial criticism but proved beneficial once implemented," the Head of State remarked at Istora Senayan on Monday (May 27).

The President realized that there must be pros and cons behind the policy. However, he ensures that the community will feel the benefits if the policy is already running.

"It's normal for people to have concerns about a new policy, calculating whether they can afford it or if it’s burdensome. Things like that will be felt after running. If not, there are usually pros and cons,” President Jokowi concluded.
