President Jokowi Promises to Add Fertilizer Subsidies for Farmers

Jakarta – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) promises to add fertilizer subsidies for 2024 to answer the farmers' complaints.
The Head of State has conveyed this to Agriculture Minister, Andi Amran Sulaiman. This also will be controlled next year.
"I will add the fertilizer subsidies because the supply of fertilizers is also available," the President said in Pekalongan, Central Java, on Wednesday.
Furthermore, the President explained that the Government has simplified procedures for farmers who need subsidized fertilizers.

Earlier, farmers had to show a Farmer Card to get subsidized fertilizer, but now in certain areas, farmers only need to show their ID cards to get subsidized fertilizer.
"I have approved the purchase of fertilizer as long as the ID card says 'farmer', please use it (to get subsidized fertilizer). So you can use the Farmer Card or ID card," President Jokowi remarked.
The Head of State also emphasized that the government's focus on dealing with the fertilizer issue is important to resolve to increase food production in Indonesia.

However, President Jokowi admitted that he could not yet announce the amount of additional fertilizer subsidies because it needs to be discussed further with the Minister of Finance and must be approved by the House of Representatives.
In addition to increasing production, the expansion of access to subsidized fertilizers for farmers is expected to reduce the impact of the El Nino phenomenon which leads to imports of agricultural products.
"How can we reduce imports next year, because our imports of 3.5 million (rice) can increase again, if we don't reduce it from now on," Minister Sulaiman said in early December.
In addition, the President also asked farmers to accelerate planting so that Indonesia will rise again by laying a powerful foundation to realize self-sufficiency.
