Jokowi Orders National Data Backup to Anticipate Cyberattack in the Future

Jakarta – Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has reminded all government officials to maintain backup data servers. This has become crucial because the server at the National Data Center (PDNS) in Indonesia was recently hacked, and no backup was available.
"The most important thing is that all the data we have must be backed up," said the head of state at Sinjai General Hospital, South Sulawesi, on Thursday (July 4).
According to President Jokowi, with a backup data will facilitate the protection of public data in the event of any data-damaging incidents.
As information, an attack on the PDNS 2 system has been ongoing since June 20 due to a Lockbit 3.0 ransomware attack. This attack locked critical data within the system.
As a result, most of the data in the data center, used by 282 central and regional government institutions, was locked and became inaccessible.

To unlock the encrypted data, a decryption key is required. The government then claimed that the attackers demanded a ransom of US$8 million, or around IDR 131.8 billion, in exchange for the decryption key.
However, the Communication and Information Ministry stated that they would not comply with this demand.
Subsequently, the hacking group that claimed responsibility for the cyberattack on the National Data Center, known as Brain Cipher, eventually returned the data by providing a decryption key link for free.
This link is claimed to unlock the data encrypted by the ransomware attack carried out by the group. Despite this, they continue to issue additional threats.
